(Anonymous) 2017-02-18 01:26 am (UTC)(link)I can't remember where it was, but a few years back there was someone pointing out that you could more or less predict the popularity of slash in the fandom just by comparing how many lines the men in any given film had, compared to the women. I definitely think there's something in that: People write about the characters that interest them, and those are naturally the ones that get the most attention in canon.
But yeah, there are certainly a lot of people who are into slash because they just like gay stuff, and I think there's a good number of them who don't realize that gay fanfic has very little to do with the RL experiences of queer people. I don't know how queer people feel about this, but my guess would be that the real problem would be the moment where (slash fans crowd to queer stories because of omg canon gay.
