The Kill Your Gays Trope

If a movie has a big group of people and one of them is gay but the rest are straight, and they're all killed at the same time in the exact same way (like a plane crash or something) does it count as Bury Your Gays?

No imho

Not really. Bury Your Gays specifically refers to a trope, which has historical baggage, where gay characters can be portrayed but not have happy endings. They either have to be "punished" by the narrative, or the series just refuses to commit to making a fully developed gay character so doesn't know what to do with them beyond the fact that they are gay, so kills them off. Or the insisting that gay characters must have tragic endings because being gay is hard, so kill them for the sake of forced tragedy.

If most/all characters die, regardless of orientation, I don't necessarily think it counts, but depending on how the characters are developed (or not developed, as it may be) I think it could still feel annoying.

Prior to the plane crash, is equal weight given to each character that dies? Or is the focus of the movie on the gay character, her/his death, and their loved ones' reaction? I'd say that could be considered Bury Your Gays, but the former isn't.

If there are survivors, and the only gay dies then it is kill your gays. If there is more than one gay of each sex and one survives then it isn't. If there is a lesbian and a gaydude and one of them dies, and it will probably be the gaydude, then it is still kill your gays. Basically if the movie/book/play/whatever ends and the survivors are heterosexual, or they started with gays of opposite genders and only one gender survives, then it is kill your gays. Now if there are four gays, say three gaydudes and lesbian then it is still kill your gays if the lesbian dies but it isn't if along with the hets the lesbian and even one of the gaydudes live. It doesn't matter if it is a mass killing or not.

Depends. I'm presuming that if we knew they were gay before the plane crashed that it was built in as part of their character. If they were the only gay character in the movie, if they died in that plane crash, and then the movie moved on to other, straight characters, then it'd strike me as a bit kill-your-gays, yeah. If they were the only gay character in the movie, if they were built up and then killed off, and the movie moved on without them, then regardless of the size of the group in which they were killed I'd still be inclined to call it this trope.

Depends entirely on the execution. Just like not every movie where a female character dies is an example of fridging, not every movie where a gay character dies is an example of Bury Your Gays.

But a whole hell of a lot of them are, because those are cheap writing shortcuts beloved by screenwriters everywhere.

No, the death needs to be singularly focused on that gay. You need to feel like "Well it only happened becuase they're gay" for it to count.
