Re: Gender & Slash

I like m/m slash and I'm a cis woman. I don't worry too much about it but I have wondered. I didn't always read slash, I started with het, but I don't think I ever read smutty het. Don't really know how or why. Maybe because it was easier to find smut-free het fic than slash? I do know that these days reading smut involving a woman makes me self-aware(?) or uncomfortable(?) in a way slash doesn't. Like, it's too close to home. Considering I'm 32, a virgin, and not too bothered about it...Lately I've been starting to think I'm somewhat asexual.

I think slash can both help and hinder queer representation. I know I wasn't nearly as well-informed or interested in LGBT rights before I started reading slash. I also figure the existence of this kind of fic and shippers, lets creators know there is a market out there for this stuff. But yeah, on the other hand, there definitely is queerbaiting and fetishization. I don't know what to do about those, except not be one of the people fetishizing and calling out when there's queerbaiting.
