I feel you, OP. What really bums me out is that if one of them had been a girl, I'm positive they'd be a locked in couple.

Yep, this is my feeling too. Like, their friendship as it is is wonderful. But their relationship also has all the trappings of a good love story, and if one of them was a girl, they'd have a much higher chance of actually getting together on the show. :/

I could see it happen, too. They have that star-crossed lovers feeling to them, considering that this is the second time Shiro disappeared, leaving Keith behind. If they were an m/f pairing, I would expect an emotional confession after they get reunited somewhere down the line.
