I think you're massively oversimplifying Nabokov's habitual game-playing if you perceive a single "intended point". Part of the fun of the novel is that Humbert IS charming, he even charms the reader, creating this repeated emotional whiplash as you're forced to go "Heh, yeah, this guy makes a good point about JESUS WHAT THE FUCK."
