That movie was made at the weird point in time where Leonardo DiCaprio and Jodie Foster were identical cousins.

Oh man, he played it to the hilt in this movie.

As spiteful and spoiled Louis and as vulnerable and vanquished Philippe. It is so wonderfully cheesy, but yes, the costumes, and yes, the pretty. Every time I've watched it, I'm sort of amazed at the cast they got.

(Also a good movie for pretty DiCaprio: Romeo + Juliet.)

Slightly off topic, but your alliteration there is fantastic. 'Vulnerable and vanquished', I want to use that in something now.

(Also yes to Romeo + Juliet. It's a much maligned movie, but I love it).

ayrt

your alliteration there is fantastic Thanks, I was proud of it.

(Romeo and Juliet is not my favorite Shakespeare, but if I was going to pick a version to watch, it would be Romeo + Juliet, which is very visually appealing to me.)

I keep on wanting to watch Romeo+Juliet, and I keep on not finding it anywhere :X

Excellent taste, OP. I was on the fence about Leo, mostly because I'm contrary and he was everywhere and "every girl loves him!" But yes to this movie. I love how cheesey it was but that they 110% went for it. I haven't watched it in years, but I've re-watched it several times and always enjoyed it.

(Other than the vague panic attack feeling I get when I think too hard about the iron mask...)

Haven't seen it but I adore good, accurate period costuming and that is a lovely outfit

THIS!

The costumes and sets are gorgeous, and the film had a fabulous cast, of which Leo was probably the weakest. So, in spite of the cheesiness, I still love it. But more for Jeremy Irons and John Malkovich, I must admit.

I love everything about this movie except some of the cheap laugh stuff involving Gerard Depardieu.

Am I the only one who doesn't prefer young Leo?

I've always been pretty neutral on him, but given the choice, I'd rather take him as he looks now. My interest in pretty boys has diminished further and further as I get older (I'm not into older men, either, but he's not far enough off my age to really qualify as older). I'm sure I would have preferred young Leo 20 years ago.

No. Young Leo was on the willowy side. I'm not that big, but I'm muscular and I like a man that I couldn't snap in half with my thighs.
