Undramatic Fandoms

(Anonymous) 2017-02-21 12:16 am (UTC)(link)
What are some examples of fandoms that don't have notable drama or toxicity or conflict?

Especially ones that aren't just so tiny no one pays attention

I rarely see drama in any fandoms I am in because I never go into tags and constantly cull my follow list. So, if there is drama in this fandom, I don't see it. But, The Walking Dead. It is a pretty small fandom but I would not call it tiny.

It always seemed to me like a significant part of that fandom was about getting way too invested in Internet Nerd Zombie Arguments and stuff? but maybe that's not the same as toxicity

Yeah, I don't really consider debate toxic or dramatic. Debate is what keeps fandoms alive!

Earth's Children, to a point. We've had some minor spats, and we actually had a LOT of drama for a while... but it was also many years ago, twelve years ago in fact. And no one has heard about it.

I think part of it is that it's so small, but also, most of the members are older.

Mad Men

NAYRT - Does Mad Men even have a fandom? I always wanted to be in it, but what I found was barely active... unless that's the point?

Mad Men fans don't tend to be very dramatic people, though. So that makes sense.

Well, it's not active anymore. It had a huge presense on LJ and even AO3 for a while. It's still active on tumblr if you know where to look and whom to follow.

AYRT - Really? Was it after the fifth season? Because I looked everywhere, and the only place I found was a comm that was mostly reaction posts (so nothing other than reaction posts during the episodes - I always watched afterwards, and it seemed no one wanted to discuss it afterwards - and maybe the occasional fic. Kind of sorry I missed out, I loved that show hard.

Haven't seen much drama in the Babylon 5 fandom.

Better Call Saul had a bit of "you're not doing fandom the way I do fandom therefore you're doing it wrong" drama last summer, but it's pretty mellow and drama-free in my experience.

I have yet to encounter toxicity in the Dishonored fandom.

There was quite some hostility surrounding Wyman's gender, the Outsider's old voice actor and Emily's sexuality for a while but I think know it has calmed down by now.

I've heard Voltron fandom is a shitfest, but honestly I've found it really mellow and fun so far. I just follow a couple of tumblrs and not tags, and I don't really go anywhere else. Just lots of cute art and headcanons. I know there was an uproar with people shouting "pedo" and even attacking the VAs, but I've never actually seen any of it and most of the people into my ship seem pretty chill.

idk about the tumblr side of things because I refuse to wade into the tags on that cesspit, but the reddit, /tesg/, Nexus, etc. side of the Elder Scrolls fandom has almost no drama. I mean, outside of the endless Imperials vs. Stormcloaks debate, or the constant back-and-forth half-hearted bitching between lorefriends and waifufriends.

I mean, the last notable drama I know of was a mod author deleting his stuff after Trump was elected (because I guess America didn't deserve his mods?), and some mostly private drama between a couple of guys in the /tesg/ thread a month ago.

Probably Deus Ex fandom. There was some friction over Human Revolution and there's still a few sad sacks who won't play anything but the first game, but they're a minority (and share a lot of overlap with Thief fandom.) Most everyone is in agreement that Invisible War sucks horribly.

Anytime I've come across "Frasier" fans online, they always seem pretty chill.

And when I was part of the FakeNewsFanfic fandom, everyone there was super nice and friendly. Maybe there was a bit of wank here and there, I dunno, but if so, I missed it and only was lucky enough to encounter the good side of things.

I used to be in FakeNews too, it was pretty drama-free outside of a few shipping wars in the very beginning.

Most of my small fandoms seem to be relatively undramatic, like the RicStar side of things isn't wanky at all but it's also fairly quiet, same for the LockBell side of the Elementary fandom we're just happy to get any content and even the rest of the fandom seems pretty chill too.

Labyrinth. It helps that it's an older fandom, though.

Yeah, this.
Though there was a brief flurry of tumblr-style morality police attention after Bowie left us and the underage groupie sex story was recalled.

The Shark fandom was pretty chill, but then again, I think there were about 12 of us, tops.
