"Do you think your drug companies want you to try a cheap and harmless vitamin, when they can sell you endless drugs with scary side effects?"

Yeah, I don't blindly trust drug companies, but the problem with this "logic" is that anti-vaxxers and nutjobs use it all the time:

Hey, do you think Big Pharma wants you to know that vaccinations give you autism when they can sell you endless vaccinations with scary side effects?

Hey, did you know that somebody invented a car that runs on water but the government suppressed it because of Big Oil?

Hey, do you think your governments wants you to realize that chemtrails blah blah blah...?

Etc.

Also please consider that just because it's a vitamin doesn't mean you can take high doses of it over long periods of time with no ill side effects. When it comes to high doses of niacin, the side effects can be significant things like elevating your blood sugar levels and increasing your risk of diabetes, developing heart arrhythmias, and has also been associated with birth defects in lab animals. That doesn't even include stuff like Gastrointestinal or damaging your liver. This is why it's a very bad idea to just medicate yourself based off of a documentary you saw on Netflix instead of consulting an actual doctor or pharmacist.

The truth is that if niacin were a miracle cure for depression, drug companies would totally find a way to sell you bunches of it, because 1) this is what they do and 2) hello, miracle cure for depression!
