'No homo' tends to play queer themes for laughs, though. As if being mistaken for gay is always horrifying for the characters and hilarious for the audience.

ETA: At the end of the day, while I think both approaches are deserving of criticism, I'm personally more ticked off seeing my sexuality used as the butt of a joke. You put a lot of effort into your fruit analogy but the first clause is clearly missing the implicit, "You watched this thinking you were getting pomegranate? Lol gotcha, moron, pomegranate is fucking disgusting, we only do apples around here."
