11. I like how you worded your secret (come on, how often does one see the words 'proportional' or 'justification' on FS?), but I really loathed what Thomas Harris did to Lecter in that book. By justifying his actions, he completely obliterated the character's entire point. He's a serial killer, not Batman. Hannibal himself says in SotL: "You can't reduce me to a set of functions." It's not that simple. ...And then Harris went and reduced him. (And then he was eaten, and there was much rejoicing.)

I'm in the bizarre position of having seen Rising but not read or seen the rest of the series. Yes, I know this is lax of me. Yes, I plan on catching the rest of it when I have time. But as a character without context, without ties to the senseless evil of the original, he is madly brilliant and also sexy like nothin' else.

In defense of the author, from what I hear, he was told "Hand us a script, because we're making a movie whether you write it or not." I can forgive him some triteness under those circumstances, especially when it produced something so beautiful. And really, if you're going to write an origin story for Hannibal Lecter that's an origin story and not just a series of pointless and deliciously gruesome murders, how else would you do it? I sure don't know.

Really? As in, you haven't seen 'Silence'? Weeeeeird.

I'll concede that Harris is actually a pretty spectacular writer. He does atmospheric suspense extremely well. So perhaps he's not to blame. I really, really, painfully wish he hadn't been pressured into writing it. Origin stories tend to suck the fun/awesome/artistic value out of everything.

(But Gaspard Ulliel? Hot. Hothothot. Ungodly hot.)

On to the actual topic of discussion: yeah, I know. It's a common joke with me and my friends that I am a cultural black hole. I hadn't seen Pulp Fiction until a friend sat me in front of a DVD player last year. Et cetera.

And I still maintain that taken on its own, without the "oh eww origin story" stigma, Rising is AWESOME. In fact, I'm half-tempted not to watch Silence just because it might make me like Rising less. (It won't stop me, don't worry. I'll get to it eventually. But it's a thought.)

Oh, and yes. No argument on Gaspard. He is a shining example of sleek sharp-edged male beauty.

Actually, that's probably true. If I hadn't seen/read Lecter in other works before 'Rising', I would've enjoyed the movie a lot more. On its own, it's pretty good.

Yeah. See? It's best enjoyed in a vacuum. But I'm pretty sure I can compartmentalize well enough to enjoy the original series without letting it ruin the prequel for me. Sure enough to take a shot on it eventually, at least.

Oh, yeah, I know the band too. My dad listens to them pretty much all the time.

I'd actually recommend not seeing 'Hannibal'. The book was all right, but the film was pretty much the producers masturbating all over the franchise. Also, Julianne Moore =/= Clarice Starling. 'Silence' is basically the shiznit of shiznits, though.

Pleased to meet you! I'm Pyth! I'll take your recommendation about 'Hannibal'; it clicks with what I've heard from others about the series. Generally, I'm told I should (in order) watch Silence, read Hannibal, ignore Red Dragon, and maybe pick up the books of the movies and movies of the books that I've missed after that.

...unfortunately, the only thing I can think of that you might recognize my screenname from on FS is some minor wank from a few months ago involving Sylar secrets, or some rather larger wank from a little before that. I don't look back on either instance with pride. :/
