...I take it you're aware that in the original (Notre Dame de Paris), Phoebus rejects Esmeralda and when she fights off Claude's attempts to rape her, the archdeacon has her hung, which as a consequence leads to Quasimodo throwing Claude from the cathedral's roof and climbing into Esmeralda's grave with her?

Nah, didn't think so. Disney films tend to dumb down the original works.

...y'know, you can know the original and still appreciate the Disney movie as a different version of the story. Or am I the only Victor Hugo fan that loves the Disney Hunchback?

It just annoys me more than anything else when people rave about adaptations without knowing a single thing about the original. Hugo wrote a masterpiece, but most people don't even know it.

How do you know the OP didn't? In the original, Esmeralda was a vapid 14 year old. Not a great role model. Also, the novel's not really appropriate or accessible reading material for a young child, which is when most people see Disney movies for the first time.

FYI, I HAVE read the book and was the only dork in my group of friends who realized Disney named two of the gargoyles after the author. People can like a Disney movie and still appreciate the original masterpiece.
