Yeah, it wasn't quality that made this one a hit *g*

You can keep telling yourself that, but the show is continually winning not just popularity awards, but awards from major anime critic's circles too like TAAF. You don't have to think it's good, but a lot of people who aren't into it for shipping and whatnot think this is a damn 'quality' show.

FWIW, I find Frozen likewise mediocre - if without quite as glaring flaws - yet we all know how audiences and critics alike go about that one. And while knowing little about TAFF, I see YoI bagged a prize that Sword Art Online and K-ON has done before it.

Well considering that TAAF only started giving the animation grand prize in 2014, that would be quite impossible that they bagged the same award. :)

The previous award they did was something was one where they gave a couple different tv anime nods a year, and indeed Sword Art Online was regrettably one of them, but otherwise, 90% of the shows featured throughout the years have been... pretty darn critically acclaimed series (Tatami Galaxy, Madoka Magica, Dennō Coil, Mushishi, Gurren Laggan, etc. etc).

no sweat

I went by how Wikipedia listed them, but far be it for me to claim that I follow the animation industry much closer than the yearly moaning about the Oscsars going to fucking Disney/Pixar/Dreamworks again *g*

I'll take your word for it, but if that was the critics' choice, then my conclusion would be that 2016 was a sad year for TV anime. YoI is cute and all, but it's got some pretty severe writing problems in places that makes it look like they honestly didn't know what they were doing with it. I really do understand why people like the show, but the OP has my full sympathy about feeling lied to about how amazing it is.
