I literally only remember the Chinese guy because he was adorable. haha But yes, lots of other forgettables. I reckon it was both so you wouldn't know who would advance (though even JJ wasn't introduced until toward the end of the series, since he wasn't in Yuri's rounds) - but also they tried to make it more of a show about ice skaters in general. Even though Yuri/Victor/Yurio were obviously the leading trio, I think they wanted give more solidarity to professional skaters in general and how they each have their own dreams and goals, etc.

Which doesn't inherently bother me, except that there should've been more time with the actual protagonist. I wouldn't have minded more fun, in-between-rounds episodes like episode 10 or 11 (forget which it was) when all the skaters went out together. I think seeing their dynamics together was way more fun than just having backstories shoved at you.

Really hope there is a season 2, at least then they won't need to introduce a bunch of new characters since they have a large enough cast already, and maybe we can finally get more development from the major players.
