Any particular reason? Or did they just seem more interesting as a sort-of-devoted couple?

Their whole 'last of our kind left to repopulate the species' thing can be quite tragic. If we go by the comment below, tragic pairings in SM win extra points. (I am such a sucker for Nephrite/Naru in the anime, like fuuuuuck.)

Like anon above said, part of it is the tragedy, and part of it is that I liked watching them navigate their relationship when they really didn't know what a relationship even was or what love was. They cared, but didn't know how to even recognize that feeling. All those tensions between them (where Usagi and Mamoru have... basically none, really, so bland)
They were also hella adorable, when they were being adorable.
I just enjoyed them. And I like their designs, too.
