There's only so many things you can put on something pixelated before it becomes a jumbled mess and so of course they had to keep that design simple, but the remake didn't have to deal with those confines, so they added more things to the design.

Even so, I think if the intention for Matt to be a heavily muscular giant then they could have communicated that in the original sprites. Same with Tabitha--if their intention had been to make him short and squat, they could have communicated that in the original sprites. I mean heck, look at Original Matt. Clearly they didn't have any issue getting "this character is fat" across.

Okay and? It seems like they wanted to go in a different direction as well, considering some of the other changes made like the Maxie and Archie redesigns.
