Re: Question about computer/console/video games

Your proscription against fantasy excludes one of the darkest series of all -- Dark Souls, which has a pretty healthy multiplayer component integrated fully into the game.

Oh? I pretty much just excluded fantasy games, because I thought they'd be too friendly. You know, too much role playing as a mighty orc princess and not enough violence.

I'll have a look at that Dark Souls business. Thanks!

Not all fantasy games are Zelda or whatever, and dark themes are common. Dark Souls (and its predecessor Demon's Souls, and Demon's sequel Bloodborne) are all incredibly dark.

They don't want it to be fantasy based though, which I would say Dark Souls sort of counts as (dragons, suits of armor, swords). Maybe Bloodborne would be an okay compromise? (To Op: Bloodborne has the same creators and similar gameplay to Dark Souls, but has more of a dark Victorian setting, with pistols and the like)

That's... my point? Their not wanting fantasy excludes them from the exact sort of game the character they're writing about would play.

Fair, I just didn't know their reason for excluding fantasy, if it was they thought it wouldn't be dark enough or maybe character reasons - like the character hates the fantasy genre or something ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I'll have to watch a video of Dark Souls later. The wikipedia description doesn't sound dark, just confusing.

It's a slow-paced game with RPG elements that's well known for intense difficulty. It has a thriving community in part because of that difficulty and because its online component allows players to work co-op against difficult bosses or other encounters, or, more often, "invade" the game of other players and kill them. (I sweatergod if someone shows up with a Scraping Spear in Demon's Souls one more time and breaks all my equipment with it I'm gonna reach through the screen and throttle them.)

Ha ha, so it's definitely intense and makes one aggressive. That's good.

So it's a difficult game that takes some serious skill, yes? Something that would appeal to someone who is very intelligent and competitive.

Yes, exactly. Requires some serious concentration too: a big reason why I never finished Demon's Souls is because unlike Dark Souls which I can play on PC while sitting in my comfortable chair, Demon's is PS3-exclusive and all my consoles are in my living room. I haven an ancient, 60s-era hideabed couch that is ludicrously uncomfortable to sit on, and I've never been able to play Demon's Souls for long because of it -- it's hard to concentrate!
