L4D2 does have couch co-op though, if that is something OP would want (idk if "with his friends" OP means exclusively online or in person friends too)

Maybe, but I'm really struggling to see this kid still playing a game that came out 8 years ago. At least Call of Duty and the Souls series are more recent.

Ideally, I'd want a game he can play at home with other people online, but also in a 'going over to a friend's house and play there in a group' kind of situation.

Definitely CoD in that case. Maaaaybe the Gears of War series, which is XBox exclusive and saw an HD re-release recently.
