It was drawing a lot of elements from The Woodcutter's Tale (https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Tale_of_the_Bamboo_Cutter), what with 'if you go to the moon you will lose all fear and distress and love'. Why should it deliberately change the costuming away from its source materials?

Actually, could you give an example of what about it reads as 'American' to you? So I can know if we're on the same page?
