This. I don't see the appeal over two people who were actually devoted to each other, but to each their own.

I read it more as during the time before they actually understood their own feelings, they were sexually attracted to Usagi and Mamoru, but also romantically attracted to the "idea" of love that the two of them projected. It wasn't that they actually "really" wanted them, I think they were more confused about what feelings meant and how they work, but they were getting some form of emotional reaction from Usagi and Mamoru that they weren't from each other. A plea for help kind of thing, idk.
Either way, I saw them as very confused and I found it interesting, so I cared about the process of them realizing that they actually care about each other and can try to be selfless in love.
(I didn't say they were a HEALTHIER pair necessarily lol)
