Wait, what? Cloud might not have been officially SOLDIER, but he was effectively modified into one by Hojo during the experimentation. I mean he has mako eyes and everything, he's essentially SOLDIER. He just took the really shitty route there.

I assumed the process of actually becoming a "supersoldier" wasn't just a Jenova injection and you're good to go, but something a little more refined and combined with actual training.

And I doubt Hojo's secret basement experiment was just injecting them with Jenova cells to make Soldiers, which they already knew they could do. And Zack was already a Soldier, so that doesn't make sense. I don't think it was the same process.

Obviously Cloud has Mako eyes and shit, but I don't really see any reason to believe he actually starts off with the super abilities of a First Class Soldier.

I don't think he starts off with the abilities of a First Class, but I think the time you spend with him in-game works as a kind of functional "training" to make him reach something approximating that level.
The idea was to turn them into Sephiroth clones, so I would assume it means at least sort of replicating Sephiroth's abilities into them as well, but we know that didn't work with Zack at all.
It wasn't the same process, but he's pretty hella enhanced, I think.
