mispronunciation

(Anonymous) 2017-03-01 12:45 am (UTC)(link)
I just got done listening to someone say bacon cheesebooger about 3 times in 30 seconds and it made my ears want to bleed. What mispronunciations get to you?

The mispronunciations on my parent's GPS make me wince every time. And some of it is for basic words that whoever did the voice should have known. She didn't even try.

"Fustrated." I know several people who say it like this, and even one person is one person too many.

OH YES. I had a good randomly-assigned-dorm-roommate experience, except she said she was "fustrated" CONSTANTLY. About schoolwork and her family drama, that is, not about me afaik. That word was my #1 pet peeve about her.

It's also the username of one of the mods of a subreddit I regularly hang out. That name drives me nuts.

I only just heard that one this year! I thought it was a Southern thing? It's very annoying, either way, and a lot of people at work say it this way. That and "drownded". Ugh.

I heard a song where the artist pronounced it "drownding."

Killed the whole song for me. Which is too bad because it was really good otherwise.

A old example, but still so true

Library as "libary". Forever will drive me nuts and make me think less of you.

Same. I wince ever time that happens.

I was coming into this thread to say this exact thing!

'Zizzors' for 'scissors'. 'Pellow' for 'pillow'. And 'walla'. Just...'walla'.

It makes my eye twitch when people pronounce "voilà" as "Wah-lah".

A New Yorker here who occasionally mispronounces "jewelry" as JOO-la-ree (I picked it up from Dad).

In the south-- I hear this a lot.

People say "Ideal" instead of "Idea"

Like "I have an ideal"

Or "That's a good ideal"

And somehow that l in there bugs the heck out of me.

Apropos. I have several friend who say it with an additional r like apropro. Drives me mad.

Then there's expresso instead of espresso.

And a huge amount of people I know (in my native language) pronounce Italian words very incorrectly.
