Little fanfiction mistakes

What are some mistakes fanfic writers keep making about the canon that bother you?

THAT'S NOT WHAT OMEGA MEANS IN THIS UNIVERSE. Have the decency to at least label it an AU, not just jump in and assume alpha/beta/omega all has to do with leaking butts.

Thor is not stupid nor does he yell all the time.

Things I see in Harry Potter fic that bug me:

Not knowing the difference between Priori Incantatem and prior incantato (I know this is really petty)
Mixing up the feeling of apparating with the feeling of portkeying
Putting a portrait in front of the Slytherin common room instead of a blank wall
Mixing up Parselmouth and Parseltongue

Though it's less that these things really annoy me and more that I just really appreciate it when I see people getting these things right now.

Shadowhunters TV fic that has Alec with blue eyes. (╯°□°)╯︵ ┻━┻

Thor being written as a big, dumb caps-locking idiot. (ノಠ益ಠ)ノ彡┻━┻

'Steve doesn't understand technology and can't say bad words'. ┻━┻ ︵ヽ(`Д´)ノ︵ ┻━┻

I hate ACD Sherlock Holmes fanfiction where Watson is an idiot. Just because he's not as smart as Holmes doesn't mean he's a moron.

I have that exact problem with 30's and 40's Holmes movies!

This isn't for a particular fandom, but writing characters with random attributes they clearly don't have if you've actually watched the show. Blonde instead of brown hair, blue instead of green eyes, tan instead of pale skin. Etc. People have these archetypes in their mind and don't seem to care what the actual facts are a lot of the time.

The blurry line of what's called dark blonde/light brown/sandy/honey hair lends me to give writers some slack there. I knew a girl who was very insistent her hair was dark blonde, but it was the identical color as her brother's and he said his hair was brown.

Yep, I think my hair is light brown, but some people have called it blonde (I even got corrected in Spanish class for saying "pelo cafe" instead of "pelo rubio").

When a character says a cool word/phrase once and fanfic writers need to put it in every single thing they say.

Come on guys, Jack Sparrow says 'savvy?' three times in the first movie, he doesn't put it between every other word like a weird form of 'um' or 'like'

Oh god, yes. I think writers are trying to use it as a shortcut to proper characterization, but it's still annoying!

With the Hux secret, I'm 99% sure Kylo Ren is supposed to outrank Hux in canon. Fic almost always has Hux outranking Ren.

I even saw a thing once that pointed out that Hux defers to Ren and treats him like a superior in canon... and came to the conclusion that it was Hux showing his softer side by treating Ren like he outranked Hux when he didn't.

I may be wrong but I think they either share command/are of a similar rank or, more likely, Kylo is outside of the military ranking system?

Re: Little fanfiction mistakes

(Anonymous) 2017-03-01 06:17 am (UTC)(link)
I'm not a huge SW fan, but I came away thinking the second, that Kylo wasn't part of the military, except maybe in a weird twisted chaplain sense, but military chaplains are still part of thr military, and he didn't seem to be.

Re: Little fanfiction mistakes

(Anonymous) 2017-03-01 01:23 pm (UTC)(link)
SA - Outside of it works too. But there definitely wasn't any sense that Hux was unquestionably in charge of him and outranked him and could order him around like fandom has decided.

Ehh, granted, I haven't been in the fandom for a while and was never into the "super dom Hux and woobie sub Kylo" fics. But I've seen plenty "Kylo is outside the military ranking and Hux can't touch/order him if he wanted to" (usually paired with "and he's royally pissed about it"); "Kylo is of about the same rank as Hux and they are co-commanders" and even "Kylo outranks Hux".

So yeah, I agree that there wasn't anything in the movie to give the impression that Hux outranks him but I also don't think fandom is unanimously or that opinion.

Nicknames that have never appeared in canon. I'm having a real rough time of this right now in FFXV fic, with everyone and their mother using "Prom" as a nickname for Prompto. Literally no one has ever called him that! It's becoming an insta-back button for me.
