sounds like bad DMing. I hate the dungeon crawl aspect of tabletop but I can't say it's any less terrible than "hey so we're having another event where everyone acts stupid and OOC! yayyyy! let's all be OOC! let's have lots of ridiculous pairings and sex! let's all have lots more characters than we can actually have!"

also oddly enough, seems that people who play tabletop usually only do it once a week or so at maximum, so they don't constantly go on about how they're failing to do their schoolwork because omg they have to RP!!!11

that part is pretty frustrating.

Well, all the people I tabletop with seem to think that dungeoncrawling is the essential activity of it.

I'll agree with you on that. I've been really lucky to find a bunch of LJ RPers who really care about keeping things IC, and who aren't really into getting their characters laid as extensions of their own lacking sex life, but I've seen loads of games that seemed to consist of nothing but shit. I suppose I've just been really unlucky with tabletop games, and really lucky with LJ RP, because my experience has always been that tabletop RP, while fun, is limited when all your irl friends seem to mistake it for a MMO.

The failing their schoolwork due to RP part always baffled me. I can't understand how mods wouldn't think it was acceptable for someone to go on hiatus for exams, or to be a little less active if their classes's difficulty demanded it.

I-I have to say that a few of the F!S and RP!S secrets can sometimes LJ RPing seem pretty...not good, with their, "this game stole my friend from me" and "you play this character OOC :(" and "I'm failing out of college because of this game" themes, but, um, idk, in my experience, I've never seen anything like what shows up on here. :| And while I've come across a couple of OOC crack games, there are a ton of really awesome IC games with serious plot and character development, and very little to zero sex/pairings.

As for the school thing -- I mean, I joke around with my friends about failing to do my schoolwork because I'm RPing and that OMG I SHOULD BE STUDYING/WRITING AN ESSAY BUT INSTEAD I'M THREADING! WTF! but the truth is, I do manage my time and I get all my schoolwork done, and done pretty well; I just exaggerate and spaz as stress relief, and it's really kind of a method of procrastinating, the same way I'd sit and watch a tv show while thinking, "Huh, I should actually study for this exam, but screw it, I wanna do something else for a little bit before I get back into it."

At the very worst, it's a case of "I might've been able to do a little bit better if I'd studied some more instead of RPing" rather than actually, "OMG! I spent all my time RPing and now I literally failed the final exam. DX;;" kind of thing.

For me, anyway, and all of the people I know/RP with. I mean, maybe there are people who literally fail because they were RPing, but I'd say those are the extreme cases who are (hopefully?! otherwise my faith in humanity will drop even lower than it's at right now) few and far between.
