Wow thanks OP, I read the first book a long time ago and couldn't remember anything about it except the cover, the word "tripod," and how much I hated that there were no female characters (or none important enough for me to remember, I guess). I was thinking about it really recently and wishing I could remember the title or something so I could look it up. Your secret saved my curiosity! And apparently I agree with it.

OH MY GOD A FELLOW TRIPODS FAN

*flails*

*ahem*

So anyway yeah, these books were written in the 1960s so I take them with that layering of unconscious sexism and acknowledge the fact. Otherwise they're actually really good as a bildungsroman type tale of a teenage boy discovering what's "behind the veil" of the world he lives in, and his participation in defeating the Big Bads.

I quite liked the british TV show based on these. I don't think it was ever completed though...

SA as above

I was really annoyed at that. The two seasons were pretty good (although I largely skipped past that stupid travelling circus subplot they shoehorned in after the escape from the City of Gold (and Lead)).

I always preferred The Knights of God instead, and the good news is that it was completed. The bad news is that there is no official DVD release because the production company tanked and nobody knows who now owns the rights. The good news is that it means the bootleg dvd is legally available. The bad news is that you can see all the old UK commercials. The good news is those commercials are super camp.

There were sequels to the White Mountains? TIL
