A comedy sitcom?

(Anonymous) 2017-03-03 12:51 am (UTC)(link)
Comedy sitcoms help me unwind, but I'm kind of picky so it's hard to find one I can really get into. Recs, anyone?

Stuff I like:

Parks and Rec
Brooklyn 99
The Good Place
Archer
iZombie
The Santa Clarita Diet

Stuff I thought was okay but not great:

Angie Tribeca
Unbreakable Kimmie Schmidt

Stuff I didn't like:

The Office
Modern Family
Community
30 Rock

Have you watched Bob's Burgers? My sister likes a lot of those shows and she loves The League.

Bob's Burgers falls into the category of "Stuff I thought was okay but not great". With a few exceptions, I prefer live action to animated comedy.

First of all, I'm amused at the idea of a "comedy sitcom" as opposed to some other kind of sitcom, but that's neither here nor there.

I'd be really interested in hearing what you disliked about Community and 30 Rock, and what you liked about the shows you liked, and it might help give better recs. But my generic sitcom recs are probably Newsradio and Better Off Ted. Cuz they're both really good.

I couldn't really put my finger on it re: Community... it's partly because their fans are OH SO ENTHUSIASTIC and the first episode didn't really wow me. I love Donald Glover, but that's it.

As for 30 Rock, I dunno. The premise didn't sound interesting and I dislike Alec Baldwin.

Community's fans are definitely annoying but I liked the second and third seasons a lot after only thinking the first was OK so it might be worth pursuing more. I don't know.

Have you seen Speechless on ABC?

Nope. What do you like about it?

The cast is excellent. I think the writing is really smart and funny. I enjoy a good dysfunctional family comedy... One that's well done and doesn't use that dysfunction for cheap laughs. And I like the plot of it. It's cool to see a show that talks about disability in a way that's realistic for people who have one.

That sounds promising, thank you!

The only modern one i've really liked is Powerless.

The humor is pretty dry, it plays on superhero tropes for the ordinary people. I wouldn't necessarily say all the characters are likeable, out of a cast of like six people, it's around three, but they are pretty funny.

If you don't like The Office, I don't think you'll like Powerless.

I always recommend Better Off Ted when someone wants a comedy, but that is much drier humor than most standard sitcoms.

I think you might like Superstore? The feel of it is very similar to Brooklyn 99, imo.

NAYRT

(Anonymous) 2017-03-03 01:13 am (UTC)(link)
Have they gotten better about not just showing the good jokes in the previews? I stopped watching after a few episodes because I'd see the preview and the rest of the episode was sort of bland by comparison.

I have no idea because I purposely don't watch previews for any show because the people who make the previews often spoil things and I try really hard not to be spoiled.

Have you tried Red Dwarf before?

It's about a couple of guys who are stranded together in space and encounter all kinds of odd things while trying to get back to Earth. The humour and the wackiness of the show is probably closest to Brooklyn 99.

Media about reformed members of hate groups

[personal profile] kaijinscendre 2017-03-03 12:52 am (UTC)(link)
I'm looking for shows, documentaries, books, podcasts that talk to or about reformed members of any hate group. Particularly if it discusses what made them change their way of thinking.

I know NPR had something along those lines and I googled and I'm not sure if this is the one I was thinking of, but it fits?
