I do this if something about the summary and/or tags makes it seem like the fic might not have a happy ending. Like, I really love super angsty fics, but if the tags imply the fic is dark and painful, I'm definitely going to check the ending.

One thing that kind of bugs me is how a lot of fic authors use the "Unrequited Love" tag to mean "The characters think their feelings are unrequited and have tons of angst about it, but eventually it turns out their feelings are entirely requited." I mean, those are not the same things at all. So every time I see the "Unrequited Love" tag I have to check the ending, just in case, even though 95% of the time, it's actually not unrequited at all.

The unrequited thing bugs me too. I prefer when it's labeled something like "pining".

I think there's a common misunderstanding where people think "unrequited" just refers to un-culminated pining or something. I see it misused a LOT.
