I really haven't seen any cases of that and saying that people read too much into it is too often used as a dismissal for legitimate discussions.

Not really. As a feminist myself, I've seen plenty of it in fandom meta. I recall reading an analysis of the show 'Firefly' a few weeks ago. The fan who wrote the post used the fact that the main female character referred to her male superior/captain as 'sir' as proof of the show's latent misogyny. I'm not exactly sure how tripe like that can be justifiable proof of sexism, but feel free to analyze.

Firefly is one of the few discussions I haven't followed. I tend to read a lot of the meta even if I am not in the fandom. I don't know -- maybe the OP in that case was thinking of it as part of a long series of other instances rather than just by itself. From just what you say, though, no, that's not proof of sexism.

But I have read a lot -- probably most -- meta relating to gender/race (even in fandoms I have never participated it, as I mentioned), I think, and 99.9% of the time it's not reading too much into it (even if not everyone agrees) and that is used as a dismissal of any conversation.

Considering that the title of her post was 'A Rapist's View of the World: Joss Whedon and Firefly,' I really doubt it. For the record, I believe the issue she had with the character 'sirring' the main male was because he was white and she was black. But really, considering how she presented the topic, both points are kind of irrelevant, considering he's the captain and would be referred to as 'sir' by subordinates of any race or sex (and he is.)

No, and I do agree. There is plenty of worth that comes from fandom meta, and most of it includes topics that need to be addressed. In some cases, though, as I said earlier, fans are unreasonable with their interpretations of shows. Like that saying goes... 'If all you have is a hammer, everything looks like a nail.'

I can understand by why someone might have an immediate ick reaction to sirring if there are gender and race involved, but yeah, I do agree that is how you address a superior and in this case it doesn't sound like anything more.

That can happen. I think my main problem is the tone of the phrase itself. Disagreeing is fine, but if someone disagrees, they should be able to present reasons, like you did here. "You're just reading too much into it" doesn't present any reasons and just rubs me the wrong way.

Eh, I apologize, then. I have a bad habit of just typing out what I feel on a subject without actually backing what I say up. Well, initially.

Hee, I do that too sometimes, no worries. You were able to though, and did, and that counts. :)
