what's the difference between whump!fic and hurt/comfort? Is there a difference?

IMO, whump is basically hurt/comfort. I think whump is a more old school term for h/c. The only difference might be that whumped characters are more....pitiful.

Technically, whump is just extreme!hurt/comfort, but it usually also has a "and when I'm blind from soap poisoning, they'll be sorry" vibe to it.

Man From UNCLE fandom has some really great whumpy fics - Napoleon Solo makes for a great woobie. I liked this one a lot:
