this is actually the reason I sort of fell out of interest in fanfic tbh. It mostly just didn't feel...involved enough for me, especially since I was super picky about what I read. I never stopped reading novels, though. The immersion and focus that you get when you have to devote all your attention to what's going on in what you're reading is the draw for me.
