Sure. But books work pretty much the same way, that was my point. You have to read a bit to figure out if you like something regardless of whether or not it's fanfiction or original.

But...books don't work the same way? I don't have a whole library organized by trope and pairing and all about this one universe or character that I can freely pick up and put down on a seconds notice. The immediacy of which I can backbutton and click a new fic is very different than trying a book then having to go to the library (because no way can I afford to buy books) and check a new one out if I didn't like it. They are also not labelled by kink/trope/pairing/all pertinent info I would ever want to know.

I mean, I get what you're trying to say but no. There is a difference.

Libraries generally let you borrow more than one book at a time. I'm honestly not trying to be snarky here, it's just that you said you were trying to encourage yourself to read more books. It's slightly more effort, but I don't think it's quite as difficult as you seem to think. Maybe if you reframed it in your head, it'd be easier for you.

Save your breath. Some people have convinced themselves that they're oh so special that books just don't work for them, even though humans have managed to summon up the time and attention span to read them for hundreds of years. They truly believe that oh, no, you caaaaaaaaan't possibly read stuff without being able to sort and filter by dozens of tags because then you might accidentally encounter something that isn't exquisitely tailored to your exact specifications! Books can't do that! You'd have to, I don't know, READ the back copy or some horrible, horrible thing like that! And then you might have to, oh god this is so terrible, read ANOTHER back copy blurb! And another!

*le gasp*

Here's what I say: you want to read fanfic, read fanfic. Fanfic your brains out! It's plentiful and free! But don't make up reasons for why fanfic and only fanfic is suitable for consumption by you, the specialest of special snowflakes who must struggle daily with limitations on time that the rest of the known world simply does not understand!

I doubt you'll come back to this thread (I'm only here because of the recs from ketita upthread), but just so you know, while I understand you're trying to be helpful and I appreciate the motive, you're actually coming across as rather condescending and completely missing the point of the secret and my comment.

I have organized my Calibre e-book library mainly by genres, tropes and characters, because I organize fanfic I decide to keep in there too. It's a little hit-n-miss when I tag books from covers only, but generally it works like a charm.
