Audio dramas/plays

I'm just wondering because of that comment on secret 6 ...

Growing up, in my country there was a huge amount of audio dramas/plays - most of them for children but there also were plenty for young adults and adults. Back then, they were sold on cassette tapes, but they are still around on CD or in digital format. I just kinda assumed that this was a common form of entertainment everywhere, but apparently I was wrong? Or has the anon in that thread just never encountered them?

How common were audio dramas/plays for you growing up?

USA here. I always assumed they stopped being made when TV was invented. I didn't find out that they were more recent than that until Doctor Who fandom, and even then it took a little while to really click that they weren't just made for it because it was an old show.

I'm 40 and in the U.K. so audio dramas have always been a part of my life. I always had the impression it was just America that stopped doing them when tv became popular, but I don't know for certain.
