WTF is with everyone jumping on the OP? She's not obligated to be friends with someone just because she's nice, jesus, just to try and be civil when unable to avoid the girl.

Re: 14

[identity profile] sarajayechan.livejournal.com 2008-05-13 10:14 pm (UTC)(link)
No, but she is obligated not to be a superbitch about it. Her friend would be better off if she just dumped her.

WTF is with everyone jumping on the OP?

Because she called anyone older than her, people from different cultures where multi-generational households are the norm, and people too sick to work losers? That earns the idiot stamp in my book.

Re: 14

[identity profile] kanna.livejournal.com 2008-05-13 10:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Did she actually mention anything about this person being too sick to work? I'm just wondering because that seems pretty assumed.

Re: 14

[identity profile] jukebox-hero.livejournal.com 2008-05-13 11:06 pm (UTC)(link)
She did say that people without jobs were losers, and that includes people without jobs. If she didn't mean disabled people, she would have mentioned that they were an exception.

Re: 14

[identity profile] kanna.livejournal.com 2008-05-13 11:24 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't know, saying "She didn't explicitly mention disabled people CLEARLY SHE HATES THE DISABLED!" seems to be a bit of a strawman argument. I mean, I don't know the people in question, but I'm at least willing to assume that this secret wasn't made because the OP is horribly bigoted against the disabled. Unemployment rates and disabilities aren't the only reasons people don't work, after all; there are plenty of people who don't work and have no real reason for it.

I mean hell, the OP might be a bigoted asshole and I'm giving them too much benefit of the doubt, but it seems a little bit of a stretch to attack someone for something they may have maybe said by omission.

Re: 14

[identity profile] blinkidybah.livejournal.com 2008-05-13 11:43 pm (UTC)(link)
You're reading too much into it. It's a secret, not a legal affidavit, every exception doesn't have to be spelled out.

Re: 14

[identity profile] girl-curve.livejournal.com 2008-05-13 10:40 pm (UTC)(link)
I have no idea who the girl in the secret is, and I feel sorry for her. Partly because I'm going to be in the living-with-parents-as-an-adult boat for a little time yet due to insane rent prices even in grotty areas of town. (Plus, I actually rather like my parents.) And I need to get a job after I get my degree in a couple of months...

Re: 14

[identity profile] jukebox-hero.livejournal.com 2008-05-13 11:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Same here. I've been very sick for a long time and have been living with my family (we're Italian, so it's normal for multiple generations to live under one roof), with whom I get along very well with, because it's not really a good idea for me to live alone. I just lost my job because I brought in a doctor's note saying I couldn't do heavy lifting that wasn't part of my job description, and it looks like I might have to take them to court. The stress of it wears on me terribly.

In spite of that, I have another job that I'm practically guaranteed. I just need clearance from the FBI, and that can take 2-8 weeks to receive. What am I supposed to do in the meantime? Take another job and quit three weeks later? That's stupid! Might as well enjoy the time off (I've living off my savings, btw) and sell this stuff on Ebay I've been meaning to sell but never had the time to. I've spent over half my life working. I'm not about to feel bad over a little six-week break.

And I relate all too well with insane rent prices. Even the places in the ghetto are freakin' $900 a month anymore.

This business of pointing out exceptions is really obnoxious. There are a multitude of good reasons to live with one's parents (hell, I've been home for a month because of depression/physical injury), but sheer laziness and internet addiction is by FAR more common than exception and quite clearly what the OP is talking about. I'm not sure why people don't get this.

Or maybe everyone's just looking to be offended.

Re: 14

[identity profile] velvet-mace.livejournal.com 2008-05-14 03:54 am (UTC)(link)
I assume you've actually met a lot of people like this, and aren't just assuming they are out there because it feels right in your gut.

Personally, the only person I ever met who leeched off their parents and remained jobless out of sheer laziness was a drug abuser, and he generally prefers to crash with fellow drug users and girlfriends. He wasn't exactly hanging out on the internet writing fics, but if he did, there would be a lot more reasons to detest him than just his employment status.

I have however met a lot of people who spend periods with their parents and out of a job for a myriad of reasons who weren't lazy or particularly thrilled about the situation. Hell, when I was in college I lived with my parents, and sure I had a job for some of that time, but I was unemployed for some of it. And in the current economy, I know people who have gone months looking for work that will actually support them living independently.

So the lazy mooch is more the exception than the rule as far as my experience has been.

Re: 14

[identity profile] kinneas.livejournal.com 2008-05-14 01:56 pm (UTC)(link)
I have met many many many lazy mooches in my life, both online and off, yes.

Re: 14

[identity profile] velvet-mace.livejournal.com 2008-05-14 02:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Well I can see how you'd have a biased opinion then. But really you've just been unlucky -- it's pretty rare compared to those who are looking for employment, or have reasons why they can't attain it. It really is insulting that people have that image as their default. The OP should have specified that it was her laziness and mooching that she really disliked, rather than her employment and living situation, and she would have likely gotten no flak.

Re: 14

[identity profile] homestar.livejournal.com 2008-05-14 12:46 am (UTC)(link)
I know, right?!

Like no one has ever gone out of their way to avoid someone who was kinda losery. Someone creepy at work, the guy who smells funny on the bus, the guy on the forum looking for Powerpuff girls porn ... we're not necessarily rude to these people, but we don't get buddy-buddy with them either!

hypocritical responses are hypocritical.

Re: 14

[identity profile] xreddestinyx.livejournal.com 2008-05-14 03:07 am (UTC)(link)
I avoid people who I think might annoy me. But honestly, I don't give any weight to the "loser" concept. Someone can never have had a job, lived with their parents for 40 years, and have an awesome personality. I'd talk to that person. But I wouldn't talk to the 20-year-old 4.0 kollege stoodent who acts like a smarmy ass and acts like they're too damn good for anyone who isn't successful enough for their narrow standards. Because that's not cool by me, and it's never going to be.

Re: 14

You like children geeky cartoons while calling others losers, mock people who live with their parents yet you still live with your mom, and *you* talk about others being hypocritical?
Bitch, please.

Re: 14

[identity profile] xreddestinyx.livejournal.com 2008-05-15 05:03 am (UTC)(link)
I had been thinking about that. I mean... Why fault people for living with their parents when you do as well?

Bitch talks a big game, doesn't she? :/
