14) So... this chick's only worth in your eyes is her ability to make money? Or are you afraid people (whose opinion you value) will think less of you because you have an unemployed friend. Either way, it seems a shallow and completely irrelevant thing to hold against someone.

20) Oh me too! Any time I come across the trope where the girl has to remain a virgin in order to do her job, she is reduced in my eyes to a walking vagina. Inevitably whatever vaginal powers she gains is never used for her own benefit either.

71) You really have a black hole of hatred going there. I think it's good that you realize how unhealthy it is and want to do something about it. The only thing I can think of that you could do would be to work on coming to terms with the issue that made you angry in the first place. I suspect it has nothing whatsoever to do with the fic, but is some RL issue that the fic reminded you uncomfortably of.

76) Seriously -- you stop reading a fic you like because the author used a perfectly normal English word?. The beautiful thing about the English language is that it has a rich vocabulary and you can actually put shades of meaning into your writing. Poleaxed has a cartoony-humorous shading that "stunned" doesn't. Well never mind, if you are going to let a little nit like that get in the way of your enjoyment, the only one who loses out is you.

20. That was my problem with Mai Otome. And Mai HiME is my favorite recent anime, so I was really put out that I didn't enjoy the next one nearly as much.

Lots of knees jerkin' up in this secret!

I don't know the person in question but I think it's less of a judgment of how much this person makes monetarily as how sad it is that she can be so old and still completely incapable of taking care of herself as an adult. There's nothing wrong with looking for a job, but if you spend all of your time angrily punching keys on the internet and squawking at your beleaguered parents to continue to provide for you even though you should be old enough to support yourself, there IS something wrong. I personally would not want to be friends with that person-- not because they don't make enough money to hang out with me, but because it's pathetic to have no fucking ambition or personal accountability. If I'm a grown-ass adult, I want grown-ass adult friends, not oversized 12-year-olds who don't know how to balance their hobby with responsibility.

Just to clarify, I'm talking about the people who avoid the workforce and financial independence out of their own gross irresponsibility, not those who are genuinely incapable of working.

Is she as irresponsible in everything else she does? If she's an irresponsible person, she's an irresponsible person, but simply being unemployed might have more to do with the economy in her area than her desire to have a job.

Dude, you managed to insult two groups of people with your post: those who, for whatever reason, are currently unemployed, and nerds, many of whom are employed. So you are coming off as being a bit immature and judgemental.

"Just to clarify, I'm talking about the people who avoid the workforce and financial independence out of their own gross irresponsibility, not those who are genuinely incapable of working."

Did you miss that part? Where am I insinuating that someone who can't find a job in a depressed economy is a bad person? "Those who are genuinely incapable of working" refers to either the disabled or those who are seeking employment and cannot find it.

And where did I insult employed nerds? I consider myself an employed nerd. I am nerd raging about those who can't manage to balance being nerdy with paying a couple of bills. I know a lot of people who fall in that category, and it's for no medical or economical reasons. Those are the people I am talking about, and I thought I made that clear, because that is the type of person that this secret sounds like it is probably about.

What you wrote was "She's a fucking Nerd and I want nothing to do with her" and "She is jobless and lives with her parents" and that's the reason you don't like her.

You say nothing in your secret about her being irresponsible or not balancing out her real life with her online life. That might be what you meant, but that isn't what you said. And no, people do not automatically assume that when you mean "nerd" you mean "irresponsible person with no ambition". Most people will assume when you say "nerd" you mean nerd.

And now you accuse me of knee jerking because I responded to what you wrote, rather than what you meant.

OP

(Anonymous) 2008-05-14 12:03 am (UTC)(link)
Whoever you were talking to anonymously wasn't the OP; I am.

But I do feel that way, even after reading teh responses. Anyone who spends their entire life on the internet, mooching off their parents and refusing to work is an unemployed nerd, at least in my book.

The woman is capable of work. I know her well enough to know this. She chooses not to, and loves off her parents. She is an American, like myself.

But I work hard. I'm a full time college student, I have a full time job and I live by myself. I'm quite successful. I see no reason why I should have to be friends with someone with no ambition to speak of just because we watch the same TV show.

Rock on with your bad self, seriously.

I think perhaps people are so defensive because they are or know well people in denial about their own situations.

Re: OP

[identity profile] velvet-mace.livejournal.com 2008-05-14 12:36 am (UTC)(link)
I... oh whatever. My statements stand.

There is nothing in the secret to imply there isn't a good reason for this person to be unemployed, and there is nothing in it to suggest that you aren't dissing on all nerds and all unemployed people. I responded with the secret you posted not the one you meant because I'm not psychic and I happen to know a lot of grown people who have disabilities or other reasons for not being fully employed. (I also know some gainfully employed people who live with relatives and pay rent and share or even do the bulk of the housework.)

Oh, I agree SO MUCH. It makes me angry enough to stop reading/watching every time.

Oh god, that is basically my least favorite fantasy trope ever. Well, that may be an exaggeration, but it's definitely up there. And they pretty much inevitably decide that they'd rather screw the hero(/male romantic lead) than have shiny magical powers, which is also annoying.
