I agree, but the secret poster doesn't so I was trying to phrase my question as inoffensively to the poster as possible on the off-chance I'd get a response? XD

Ah well, I'm having a hard time being tactful re:76, given how the poster was going on about it being 'pretentious' and 'not the definition' when, you know, it is the definition and common metaphors aren't exactly pretentious >_>

It's from the OED, according to anon. Also, lol Wikipedia: "The poleaxe in that spelling, refers to an animal culling device of similar appearance. It was swung so the spike struck the animal, normally cattle, in the forehead. Hence also the phrase 'to be poleaxed' referring to being stunned."

Just checked my copy of the concise OED and I get the same definition. I can screencap and post if you have doubts.
