21. We get this sort of complaint in Doctor Who fandom as well, with bonus zoophilia protests. (Although, surprisingly, we don't hear it as much in Torchwood fandom. >:-) I'm not actually sure it makes sense to judge immortal/human or alien/human relationships by straightforward human/human standards.

It does but only insofar as there's a difference in outlook on life due to different culture/degree of mortality/whatever. I'm more disturbed by Angel being kind of evil and nutty than I am about him being so old. There's a link, but the sheer age thing isn't the main problem in these situations.

I do wonder why this doesn't come up with Jack, though...

Hmm... the power imbalance between the Doctor and a young companion like Rose or even Martha is pretty obvious, but it's not so clear when it comes to the Doctor and Donna or Buffy and Angel, and even less clear when it comes to Buffy and Spike, or Ianto and Jack, where the arrow of power is arguably pointing in the other direction.

Not so obvious, no, but it's still there sheerly by virtue of their being immortal and thus ontologically built to screw over the mortal's expectations. I'd agree that the balance of power in Torchwood does tend to favour Ianto, but that's because he's Ianto and Ianto, whatever he is actually like, is not a normal person with normal needs.

IAWTC, especially the part about Ianto.

God, I hate that so much.

A lot of the people he travels with? Are not children. They are adults, in their culture, and should be judged as such.

Besides, I can think of a good deal of them more mature than he is anyway. :p

(And don't get me started on zoophilia, WTF.)

XD I need to read that series.

I bet the Doctor wrote encouraging books on it that were banned from the Academy.
