I see your secret and disagree. Then again, I only bought it knowing fully well what it was about, and found it strangely charming despite all the gloom. It was something new, engrossing and daring and Capcom deserve credit for not just slapping a lot of new stuff together, but actually creating a very fun GAME.

I will sympathize with those who expected more of the same and felt let down, but I will never agree. DQ was a breath of fresh air, and I am glad it was made.

I'm biased, because I started with 3. Now, 3 had an awesome dragon gene system that let you be any number of dragon types, any time you felt like it. DQ? Why have a game where you can turn into a dragon when turning into a dragon kills you and thus you can't really turn into a dragon? No dragon-ness is just... wrong.

I am also easily bored and have a good memory, so the thing about contsantly having to replay the same bits of game over. and over. and over just killed my interest totally. I don't even care if there was extra story - I don't want to see the same bits over and over with new bits added in, I just want to see the story in a linear fashion.

I will agree that 3's dragon system was a lot more fun, because I am a HUEG LIEK XBOX ho for dragons. BUt I felt that 5's dragon system was... appropriate. It wasn't just HAY GUYS POWERUP MODE, it was linked to the plot and the themes in such a beautiful way. It really made the game about SURVIVAL. Hunt the animals to survive. Reach the surface to survive. Fight not for the world, not for a cause, just fight to survive.

That a game could have such a small focus and still feel kinda epic made it worth the changes for me. I will agree however that the "You must replay" section was... perhaps not a bad design choice, but a very divise one? Perhaps the game would have been better of as a spin-off of some sort. Even if Capcom even went out and stated that it takes place in an AU, I wonder if the fans listened.
