^ As for kickass girls, there's Raimei, Shijima (who is really cool), and some others, but it's not a shounen or fight manga (unlike One Piece or Soul Eater), so there's less ass-kicking and more emphasis on story and... well, emotions on good days, wangst on bad days. It's pretty good (the manga is better, though), I like it, but frankly, I don't really see why the OP would think it'll ever rival Soul Eater in popularity. It's kind of a niche show, it'll be half as long, is less over the top, has a less eccentric cast, etc. Sure, it has canon pseudo BL... but that's not everyone's cup of tea. (Including me, especially as I'm not very fond of the pairing.)

Soul Eater is not my cup of tea (it would be if it had different seiyuu, different dialogues, less fanservice and would be less over the top), so I prefer Nabari, but Soul Eater will always be more popular.

Haha, speaking as someone who is v.v fond of both over the top and subtility, I'm getting the feeling from reading these descriptions I could come to love both these series for different reasons. Although I will say that in Soul Eaters defense, (in the manga at least) the fanservicey pantyshots and gratuitous nudity dips like woah after the first few chapters.

Also, I'm hearing a lot of negativity on the canon BL. Is it because it's just plain awkwardly or bad written, or is... more like a dislike of the characters involved in the affair that's the issue?

OP here, and I don't dislike the canon BL per se, more like I just can't become interested in the characters involved. And I really don't "get" their sudden closeness, it started out as one of them threatening to kill the other's friends if the other didn't help him...and suddenly they're BFF. What.

Re: 47

[identity profile] kuromitsu.livejournal.com 2008-05-14 10:53 am (UTC)(link)
Nah, the BL (I'd still like to call it "pseudo" because it's not a BL manga/anime) is actually pretty nicely written, and I can even understand how the characters could get so close to each other... it's just that both of them are very passive and angsty (one is more so than the other), and when they're together it's just overwhelming. (It doesn't help that I don't really care about one half of the pair, and I liked the other half for the devilish side of his personality.) But I seem to be in the minority with this opinion - actually, that goes for everyone who doesn't like the pair. Yoite is easily the most popular character, and people who like Yoite/Miharu seem to be in majority. There are other Passionate Male Friendships in the story, and I have no problem with those.

Aaaah.

So it's kind of like Mai/Zuko of Avatar fame, pardon in advance if I'm using a fandom you're not in, except they're both boys and they're playing it seriously?

Re: 47

[identity profile] kuromitsu.livejournal.com 2008-05-14 03:31 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't know Avatar, so I can't really comment on that, sorry. ^^;; But basically, one character has a power that's slowly killing him, and he spends most of his time angsting about his condition, his power (that he doesn't really have to use all the time, mind you, but I suppose it's more angsty that way), how he's not really alive, and how much he wants to die (or so he says). The other character is incredibly apathetic (on the surface, anyway), shy, doesn't really like interacting with other people, likes to keep things to himself, and very rarely takes the initiative in anything. (In the beginning he has a very funny, devilish side to his personality, but he demonstrates it less and less frequently as the story goes on and he "hooks up" with the other boy.)

So basically, together they're a big pile of angst and pain and passivity, which can get very irritating after a while... unless you happen to enjoy this kind of thing, like the majority of fandom. :D The characters are fine on their own, especially when they're surrounded by other, more proactive/positive/alive characters, but together...

Re: 47

[identity profile] georg-vanlunden.livejournal.com 2008-05-14 03:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, Mai and Zuko are two incredibly angsty teens characters in that show, but most of their angst is played for laughs and you really get the feel that they're just being overdramatic teens who needs some growing up. This on the other hand sounds like fullblown BAAAWWW-fests. I guess one is supposed to think it's cute that their similiar situations allow them to understand each other so well in their heart of hearts, but it ends just being twice as depressive?

Re: 47

[identity profile] kuromitsu.livejournal.com 2008-05-14 04:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, yes, exactly. Apparently it works for most readers who revel in the angst and tragedy and cuteness(??), but... yeah. Unfortunately they're the main characters so the story dwells a lot on them together, but as I said, they're fine on their own or with other characters, and I really like the rest of the cast (and the story and the pretty art), so it kind of balances out in the long run. :D The pair just gets irritating sometimes with their angst-fest.

(Btw, quite a large amount of the negativity toward the pseudo-BL content that I see seems to come from people who expected the show to be a shounen fight anime/manga a la Naruto... but it's not, not really. It may have ninja and very well-done fights, but it's very obviously targeted at a female audience, from art to characters. I imagine many people were surprised and disappointed when they realized this.)

Re: 47

(Anonymous) 2008-05-14 10:03 am (UTC)(link)
I'm OP, and I believe I mentioned Raimei and Shijima (I only found out her name like...yesterday...been reading the manga in Chinese), I don't deny they're alright as female characters, but little focus is put on them. And Raimei and Raikou's dilemma just screams cliche to me.

Hmm, wherever I went Nabari is always more popular, but mayhaps I just went to the places all the fangirls go to... But the Nabari LJ community has more members than the Soul Eater one as well.

Soul Eater...well, it's in your right to dislike its over-the-top and fanservice-ness, but I do honestly think the characters are as a majority better than ones in Nabari.

Oh and, I agree with you on the BL in Nabari. Not so hot on it either, both of them are boring to me.

Re: 47

[identity profile] kuromitsu.livejournal.com 2008-05-14 11:06 am (UTC)(link)
Well, yeah, there's little focus on the girls... but Nabari is just that kind of manga/anime. I can't really find any grounds on which the two could be compared, actually. One is a loud, energetic, over the top shounen fight series, the other is a shoujo show with emphasis on characters and prettiness and emotions and introspection and whatnot (sure, there are some fights, but they're only there to help the story along). It's pretty much the case of "apples and oranges" as far as I'm concerned. The reason Nabari may be more popular on LJ (not elsewhere as I see) than Soul Eater is that the manga has been more well-known, but Soul Eater is already much more popular in Japan and in the anime blogger world.

As for Soul Eater, my main problem with the anime is that, as I see, it's trying way too hard to be cool and edgy and unique. I wouldn't have problems with it being over the top (though I'd prefer when it's done in the style of Ouran Host Club or Utena), but somehow I feel Soul Eater is trying too hard, and it shows. But, well, it's just me. :D
