Given the contention over whether the Pratchett novel is accessible, I think it would be fun to do that and see if the criticism or the justification was born out. Plus Pratchett is pretty popular and it wouldn't hurt to try and get more people into the club discussions.

I'd be interested to see that discussion. Night Watch was my first Discworld book and it worked well for me as an introduction, but there were some interesting points brought up by other people the other day.

I'd love to see that discussion, too. My first Discworld book was Small Gods because no one told me that I shouldn't read it first (or at all). It's still my favourite not just for being my first, but because of the characters and themes. I was shocked years later to learn that people hate it when I think it's one of the best entry points for Discworld right alongside Colour of Magic, Mort, and Guards! Guards!.

My first Pratchett was Small Gods, too, and I had no idea people hated it. Why? (If it's because it's "too preachy," they probably loathed his later stuff.)
