It does at first, but it makes sense when you think about it. They're trying to eliminate the need for competition. If all the liquor stores collectively agree (in this case, via legislation) not to open on Sundays, then none of them have to because none of them will lose sales for being closed on Sundays, and as long as they can ensure that grocery stores and convenience stores are not allowed to sell alcohol on Sundays, they don't have to worry about losing business to Sunday sales. (Restaurants still can, but that's not going to supply people the same way.)

Heh, it's Massachusetts, can't even buy beer/wine at a grocery or convenience store, package stores ONLY no matter what kind of alcohol it is. Also there's no "adult entertainment" stores. Crossing the border into CT is always amusing, "WELCOME TO CONNECTICUT, HERE IS OUR PORN!" I believe MA also legalized tattoo parlors some time in the 1990s.

oh man, that's weird! Especially since MA is pretty liberal right? At least politically? So nobody is allowed to sell sex toys? Or is it just porn? that's so odd

and yeah I have heard that in some states you can't have a liquor aisle in the grocery store but I can't remember which ones - I guess MA is one of them. That sounds annoying, who wants to make an extra trip just for some basic beer? :/

Ohio used to crack me up because 1. You can buy beer and wine on Sunday, but not hard liquor. 2. So Meijer would just throw a tarp over the liquor on Sunday and 3. This is all rather fussy for a state that has drive-thru liquor stores.

drive-thru liquor stores

MA is weird, it's a mix of crunchy granola hippie liberal and "we've done it this way for 300 years, why change now?"

You could buy sex toys, but it had to be at something like a "passion party", like a Tupperware party for dildoes, I'm guessing it fell under the "novelty item" umbrella. No "adult" stores where you could buy sex toys or porn movies, though. It turned Connecticut into some sort of Fake Dick Wonderland.

It was a massive pain not being able to buy at least beer/wine at the regular grocery store. Trader Joe's without beer and wine? I am a poor student, let me have my Two Buck Chuck!

Fake Dick Wonderland
