"Why do you (the writers in the fandom) only write about the sex lives of characters when there's so much more to explore?"

Usually because that's the only unexplored/underexplored part of the characters.

It's like you don't even read the comments you're responding to.

I did read it. To me, the sex and relationship parts *are* the unexplored or underexplored parts. Maybe it doesn't seem that way to OP, but it often does to me.

I'm a little skeptical that many fandoms are that thorough in the canon material that sex is the only topic left to explore. I suspect you've got a bit of tunnel vision.

I have to agree with mrs_don_draper. Depending on the canon, characters' sex lives is very well likely to be unexplored territory.

My fandom is "Inu Yasha". Ten years, and if you're going by the manga, not a single actual kiss between Kagome and Inu Yasha. Yes, there is plenty of skinship, but no kisses or anything more risque. Ten years of pent-up frustration at my OTP not getting anything steamy (especially when Inu Yasha and Kikyou get TWO kisses, dammit!) equals me writing loads of smut.

I could write a sequel about their daily lives, but finding in-depth information about Feudal Era Japan, the peasantry in particular, is very difficult without access to a university library or scads of cash to buy rare books. I could try and write monster-of-the-week, but I'm still learning Japanese mythology, and I will never have as full a grasp of it as Rumiko Takahashi did because 1) she's native Japanese and 2) a huge fan of Japanese myths.

So, I'll write to my strengths and thoroughly enjoy myself.

1) OP didn't say that the characters' sex lives weren't unexplored territory, only that the author OP was addressing didn't explore any other territory except sex.

2) mrs_don_draper made the rather hard to believe claim that the characters' sex lives were the ONLY unexplored areas. That's a significant distinction.

Above commenters don't agree with you, but I do. I certainly don't begrudge the "sex lives" fics, but at times it feels like fanfic explores nothing else but sex.

But then I've always preferred long, plotty fiction - sure, go ahead and throw in some sex scenes, but I like a story to have more than sex.

I agree with you, OP. It's not that I begrudge people their explorations of characters' sex lives, but I'd like to see some longer, plotty genfic or something where sex isn't the sole focus.
