Have you read the Art of Language? It's not really an academic book, but a fascinating read for the average person about conlangs.

(I read books about NYC for fun, like David McCullough's "Brooklyn Bridge" or books about Penn Station that doesn't exist any more or Grand Central Station or the history of the subway.)

I haven't, but I'll check it out, thanks! I think I would like books about cities too (I definitely love documentaries about cities and architecture), but the first one I picked up about London was so pretentious I put it down again after the first chapter. I'll be trying those sort of books again when I can though. For now, part of the reason I'm reading children's language psychology is that I hope to do my research project next year on the subject, so I'll study that a bit more before picking up some new things.

The Art of Language is more generic than children's language, it's about creating new languages and basic language structure, but still a fairly easy read and fun because the writer has been involved with a lot of television shows and creating the languages for that.

Ugh, the book on the subway of NYC I got was terrible and the Brooklyn Bridge book was just super overwhelming and long, but well worth the read.
