I've given up. All the fun ones are busted now thanks to the internet and google earth, and all the creepy sinister ones about the government and the rich spying and controlling us came true. I literally would not be surprised if the next wikileaks revealed the government was lojacking us in our sleep and I would be even less surprised when the majority of the population either shrugged and said okay or got angry and started screaming at anyone who objected because lojacking us would be good for law and order.

That is how jaded I am right now. We've culturally conditioned an entire generation to accept being treated like livestock by throwing a few of the mob some bones and convincing the rest that it is their patriotic duty to submit. It sucks.

This is not distinct to any generation in any way at all. This is human nature.

I assure you it has changed very greatly over the last decade and a half. We wouldn't have put up with this level of surveillance even in the 1980s. Nor this level of social control. There would have been literal riots on the streets by everyone of all colors, and classes, until the government backed down. There was a reason they went to great lengths to keep those programs secret even into the mid 00s. I sickens me that so many people are just rolling over now.

Capitalism and social control weren't invented in the 2000s, my dude. Yes, the technological advancement of the last 20 years has provided a significant new arena for this shit, but in and of itself it isn't new

Of that I'm well aware, but technology and social attitudes have sharpened considerably in the last couple of decades. Arguing that it was always thus is exactly the thing that makes my point for me. That new defeatist attitude of just excusing abuses by claiming it was always the same is part of what I am complaining about.

Of course it's always gone in waves and changed relatively. I don't think that surveillance technology marks a dramatic discontinuity in any of those things. I don't think, in respect of culturally conditioning generations to submit to government authority and unjust capitalist systems, the present situation is dramatically different than it has been before.

The level of acceptance has increased, and worse the way that people who object are subject to personal abuse has increased drastically. And I do blame the Bush/Cheney govt post 9/11 (and to a lesser extent the Blair/Brown administration in the UK) for that. I think that was actually scarier on a societal wide scale than it is now, there was a ferocious anger there. There is still a ferocious anger towards people now, but it is less society wide and more targeted specifically at certain groups (trans* folk, women in the celebrity eye, certain native American groups, etc) now.

So - to try to understand what you're saying - your argument is that the actual conditions of surveillance, exploitation, etc aren't dramatically worse, but our acceptance of it has dramatically increased?
