It's sad, but not surprising. Fandom can be so insular...just because someone is a bnf doesn't mean anyone will care about their original work. It's the fandom /pairing/trope readers love, not the bnf's writing.

I have been a semi BNF in several fandoms and there are always a few people who love your writing specifically who read random pairings they don't ship or fics about fandoms they don't even know, just because you wrote them.

But that's one out of like, hundreds of readers.

$300/month is a honestly a helluva lot higher than I'd expect.

Yep. There are always some people who might genuinely like your writing and would be interested in at least trying your original fiction...but they're not really representative of fandom as a whole.

Number of people who like your fanfic
Fraction of people who like your writing style in particular
Fraction of people who like your original stories
Fraction of people who would be willing to pay for original stories
Fraction of people who have money to pay

Realistically speaking, I'd have been honored if someone would pay 99c for an original story of mine, and I'm not even being modest.

Yeah. And each group gets smaller and smaller. It's a shame, really.

This. I have stories with thousands of kudos and some with 100k hits but when I write in a new fandom people don't even follow me there, lol.

I am lucky to have an okay job that pays the bills if not much to save, but I probably couldn't make money with a Patreon.
