Worst thing you've lost?

(Anonymous) 2017-03-14 11:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Apparently my birth certificate and social security card have vanished. I am having a horrible week and this isn't helping.

My mom low key lost my social security card. I have to go to her house and track it down.

Also I'm mad forgetful and stupid so I've lost a lot of things...

I lost my social security card, or rather my mother did some time between when I was born and when, at age 15, I needed to get a passport card (not an actual passport, but one of those ID cards that lets you cross the US-Canada border). Turns out you need a driver's license or a passport to replace your social security card. I really don't know how I managed to convince the powers that be that I was myself, but I know at some point the beat up, photo-less library card I've had since I was 5 counted as enough ID to get me back into the system.

I haven't been able to find my favorite pair of socks I knit in years and it's driving me crazy that I don't know what happened to them.

I lost my favorite hat too, but that didn't bother me so much since I know what happened to it (left it somewhere at the mall) and I just made another one exactly like it (never has fit quite as well as the first one though).

I'm sorry, nonnie :( I hope they turn up and your week gets better!

I know it varies by state for the birth certificates but could you get replacements? I lost my social security card and it was easy to get a new one, but I had to pay and it took like 6 weeks for it to show up. I think I also had to go to an office to arrange it all, but I don't really remember because it was about 20 years ago. I was also an immigrant so it might have gone through different channels.

I lost like $160 once, but I'm not sure it counts as actually being lost, since I'm 99% sure my friend's sister stole it.

I lost a couple of expensive pieces of jewelry when I was ten. Because for some reason my mother thought it was a good idea to give her tomboy ten-year-old expensive jewelry? I do not understand her thought process there.

The graphing calculator my parents' bought me in highschool disappeared back during my sophmore year of college. I had a job at a branch library on campus and I think I must have left it out and it was stolen by a patron. It took me forever to realize it was gone, since I kept assuming it was just buried in my stuff somewhere. I felt super bad because those things were expensive and I had never expected them to buy me one. I've never told them I lost it. By then, I had no need for anything beyond the basic calculator functions, so I was just carrying around an unnecessarily large calculator, and I've had no need for a graphing calculator since, so it was only guilt tgat was the problem.

Same as you... my birth certificate and social security card. My parents lost my birth certificate and have spent the last five years saying I'm the one who lost it. I didn't fucking have it.
