I'm so confused on how anime and manga are different "genres". Mediums, sure, and if you're not into watching cartoons, you're not into watching cartoons. But not only are the stories often identical, they basically follow the same tropes and conventions. I am skeptical that one could love manga but hate all anime ever.

Not OP but as someone who prefers manga to anime I can see that. OP mentions certain things anime does have that manga doesn't. Pacing and sound. In manga you choose how fast you read or skim much more easily than having anime drag it out for drama, for example.

I was thinking that. Also, because you're reading at your own speed, there're certain things you can gloss over in manga. Like, I can tolerate incidental fanservice WAY better in manga than in anime, because the boobs are not actually jiggling at my face, and I can skim past the frames I'm uninterested in.
I can also see how if the dubbing conventions bug them, that would also not be easily solvable.

Yes. Anime tends to drag out tension and fanservice forever and ever and ever which covers what, one page or a couple of panels in manga? You can fast forward through it but it doesn't help if 10 minutes of the 30 minute episode is spent staring at each other with the steeliest of stares.

Anime can be based on manga but the anime creators choose which panels to linger on or emphasize.

If those were their only problems with anime I wouldn't be so confused. But including things like "tropes" and "genre conventions" on the list of why they like manga but not anime makes the whole thing weird. Those have nothing to do with the difference in the medium. There's no difference between them when you switch from anime to manga.

Yeah, but we were giving examples about how some tropes can also be less obnoxious in manga than anime, for instance. The mediums really are quite different.

Dragon Ball is the king of this! I read the manga first. I decided to try a random episode of the anime. I quit when it not only 1. dragged out a surprise attack taking a few panels to almost five minutes of the enemy crawling closer, but also 2. added two of the characters seeing each other and introducing themselves just to pad things out.

Also some art styles work much better as still images than while moving. The first two seasons of Sailor Moon Crystal and several CLAMP properties come to my mind.

I mean, I guess, but as far as pacing, that's really going to depend on the series. I've definitely seen shows that are panel for panel the same as the manga, though it's true some have to be reworked slightly to fit in the 25-minute episode format plus mid-episode commercial break.

I can't comment on sound. Does OP not like any movies at all? Or is it just anime? And if so, what in the world makes anime different? I grant that an annoying voice actor can ruin enjoyment, but still, it just feels a little baffling to talk about all anime like that.

Not saying OP needs to like anime or anything, just genuinely confused on how one can love manga but be so vehemently opposed to anime.

I don't enjoy movies as much as books. If there is a book or comic version, I'll opt for that one to get the story.

I don't think anime is horrible. I don't enjoy it.

Yeah, I came here to say this. And they even say they'll read the manga version of an anime? I know some manga are really different from their anime (usually when the manga comes first, less often so when the manga's based on the anime), but most of them aren't that different.

IDK, if someone made realistic comic versions of MCU, that would not be the same experience as watching the movies, even if the story and characters were all the same.

I would find it very weird if someone were to claim they're so similar as to be no significant difference.

This! Exactly. There are things that work perfectly on a page that don't work on film/animated. There are things I love about the Marvel comics I've read that really wouldn't work in the movies. Not just because the take on the characters is different (which again, is a factor in all this) but because it just wouldn't translate well.

That said, I'd pay so much for a adaptation of Death of Captain America.

I think it's just a misuse of the word "genre" and OP meant "medium" or "form of art/entertainment."
