I've thought about it more since submitting this, and my biggest problem is that it takes the game so far from reality that the real-world morals it tries to discuss no longer function anymore. It's not just that daemonblight isn't real; it's that any real-world issue you tried to compare it to would be stupid, simplistic, or bigoted. (At the time I submitted this, I assumed it was a mental illness metaphor, which pissed me off because most mentally ill people aren't murderous cannibals. At the point I've reached, it seems to be going for more of an order vs. chaos metaphor, but I'd be all for order if chaos made people turn into cannibalistic monsters.)

Well, you're right, it's not exactly comparable to any real world issue, but I didn't think it was meant to be. The closest thing you can do to compare it to a real world issue, I think, is to say "What if the negative emotions that exist in all of us were capable of manifesting as a physical ailment that could literally transform us into monsters?" Nothing like that really happens IRL, so it's just a "what if," a part the story that's fantasy just like malakhim and artes etc don't really exist either.

In a bigger sense it might be trying to create a narrative message that all people do have bad in them and that's normal, and that it's also important to recognize those things about yourself and keep them in check so they don't end up defining you. But that's still not an exact parallel to the story and I don't think it's supposed to be thought of as one.

To try to explain where I'm coming from more, I think malakhim basically work as a metaphor. You've got a society with their own lives and culture, and then another society "discovers" them and decides they must exist to be used as servants. The fact that the malakhim have magical powers, or the fact that they're not born from parents, don't change the situation enough to muddy the parallels to real-life slavery and exploitation. My problem with daemonblight is that people literally turning into demons if they get too emotional weights the problem way too hard against emotion compared to the real world.

Maybe it's a Japanese thing, where if you're going against the social order, that's such a big deal that you feel like you've turned into a demon? I'm still not inclined to cut much slack, since going against the social order doesn't automatically make you as bad as a crazed cannibal.

Question, have you finished the game? Because it might look that way from the point where you're at (although I think it's a very shallow way of looking at things, because it's always hinted that people who become daemons don't actually deserve their fate and it only happens because something is wrong with the world), but it would be really hard to fit your reading with the way the game ends.
