Yeah, I'm pretty sure the Boyd/Heston stuff was totally intentional. I think someone in the commentary said it was supposed to be from their youth when they were special friends and then - was Masala his name? - became a horrible person and Ben-Hur was like "yeah...no." And so they fought. And so we have many fabulous hours of what was originally supposed to be a lovers' quarrel. Whoo :)

Same here - I watched it recently for the first time since I was little and was like "helloooooo, how special can you be?" Ben-Hur - so much more than a Jesus movie.

As I understand it, Stephen Boyd, Gore Vidal and the director all got together and decided to play it that way...without telling Charlton Heston. And Heston apparently denied the story to his dying day, which amuses me greatly.
