Just because you were a stubborn idiot doesn't mean everyone else has to be. Tutorials and helpfiles are there for a reason -- if someone helps you through the basics, you can excel in the harder stuff. Obviously you know how to learn from a teacher, or you wouldn't be taking classes at all.

If I respect an iconist, I use a lot of their work. I can't say I have ever had all of mine by one iconist, even when I had only fifteen, but that's because I'm ADD.

If you don't want people using textures made by other people, does that apply to screenshots as well?

In general, it sounds like somebody couldn't play with everybody else's toys and things their shinies are better.

Maturity, please come visit the internet.

(And yes. I know you're not going to respond, you haven't responded to anyone else. But it makes me feel better to at least express the argument.)

I replied to several, but there are a lot of replies, and I was rather busy today. Several hours packing + four hours driving = little time to reply to everything. Nevermind reading everything, holy shit. I didn't even see yours at first.

Pretty much, if you saw my other comments, I wasn't feeling great that day. The responses to the original secret set me off on that little rant. (And I don't think of livejournal as a place to be mature, it's more like angst central.)

As for the texture comments, which I don't think I addressed elsewhere: When I'm making icons for myself, I honestly don't use a lot of textures. But if I do, I put a lot of thought into it. The textures I use are relatively simple: dots, paint strokes, etc. When I see someone with a giant list of sources and they put out a hundred icons a month, sometimes I wonder how much thought they're putting into their work. That was a little bit of my logic there, I know it's not fabulous and some of it may have to do with my stylistic choices, but whatevs.

And the screenshot bit: I honestly never think of that, since I usually cap things as I'm watching them D:

I'm sorry, dear, at the time I posted you had no replies, and as it was on the... eighth page or so, I'm afraid I assumed you weren't showing. D: Honestly, I apologize for that.

See, when put coherently? I can agree with pieces of your argument. I was more responding to your... tone because your points were rather generic on the secret.

I, personally, don't use textures. I prefer the way images work without them, rather than with them, and actually avoid icons that other people make with textures for the same reason.

I try to cap things? But a lot of the shows I like are either EPICALLY LONG (Andromeda), hard to find (Air Gear Musical / Early Edition / Star Trek), or just happen to already have a lot of caps posted.

Mostly, I just feel like everyone should have their own niche in eljay. If people make icons, they make icons. If they screencap, they screencap. If they write things, they write things. I don't think it's fair to say everyone should make icons. ::shrug:: Plus, personally, I don't usually enjoy my icons as much as I do someone else's. I always see some little thing wrong with it that I couldn't fix -- like the text doesn't gel exactly like I wanted to, or the color is just off. I usually have to wait like... at least a month before I'm okay with icons I've made, because that feeling goes away.

So, um. I disagree? But not as harshly as I did, because you're being coherent and I appreciate coherent argument. And I'm sorry if something here doesn't make sense. D:

Thanks for taking the time to find this comment? ♥?

Haha, no problem. By the time I was able to check, there were like nine or ten pages of comments.

Y'know, I used to be completely anti-texture myself. And then at the internship I mentioned in the post (omg i sound/sounded like such a tool seriously) I saw people doing design for a living using a few paint textures (which, uh, was my task to make/scan and which I still have on my computer) so effectively and beautifully that I was inspired to try it myself. Most of my icons are still just color correction, or colored manga images, but there are some that look quite nice with just a few brushstrokes.

I tend to switch out my icons when I notice something bad. The joys of having a basic 6-icon account! D:

I feel kind of silly talking about this, especially when I don't even touch icon communities anymore and my (friends-locked) livejournal is full of fangirling about religion and other academic things. I'm a member of fandom communities because I want to know when my manga is out. It really isn't even my niche to talk about icons, and that's a good point.
My start online was on forums, that was how I started interacting with people online. And EVERYONE made their own icons there. Everyone. Most of the forums I still go to have people who make their own icons. Are they good? Not necessarily. They're no where near as elaborate as the ones on eljay. Now I realize that this severely colors my attitude.

But yeah, I appreciate your response <3 Discussion (even if it is anonymous) is much better than irritated secrets. And you're pretty chill.

Hey, that's allowed.

I... know there are some that implement it well? But mostly people just go "Oh. I'm almost done with this icon. What can I... Well! I have this nice PURPLE/GREEN TEXTURE, let's put it on top!" And it... ruins it. Ruins it badly. ): I actually value clarity in the original image more than texturization, although, as I said a sentence or so ago, I've seen it done well and appreciate that, too. (:

Heh. I don't honestly know that I have six icons I like right now... Maybe, if I count the Oliver! ones I made a while ago.

I know what you mean with forums. XD I miss my forum days! I've pretty well migrated here because the ones I frequented died off, but still. I can see how that would change the way you think about it, especially since a lot of people on forums are severely ANTI sharing of the icons they've made, and it's a pride point, of sorts.

I completely agree! I love discussing. Even if you don't change the other person's point of view, or have your own changed, it's a nice way to stretch a few braincells.

(I no, rite?)

...I'm showing my texture point real well, by choosing icons that use them. ::facepalm::
