NAYRT

well both ships are boring and predictable imo and i like both, genyatta just does the tired old trope of the wounded one falling for the person who helps them heal "better" because it's gay and has an added bonus of robots.

Lol but that's basically exactly what Gency is minus the robots and gay. Genji is the wounded emo who falls for the beautiful blonde woman who saves him from certain death. It's so tropey I can barely believe it.

Not to mention I think you're waaaay overestimating the appeal of robots in fandom, and this is coming from someone who loves them. Genji/Zenyatta isn't more popular than it is most likely because of the whole 'robot' thing. Genji gets something of a pass from fandom because hot ass and human origin story, but Zenyatta is too inhuman for a lot of people to ship, despite the humanity of omnics being a big theme in canon.

Honestly I think it would be much more fascinating if Genji had complicated feelings of anger and shame regarding Mercy. Yeah he met Zenyatta and Zenyatta helped him somewhat come to terms with his new existence, but it's pretty clear he's got some anger issues stemming from that whole issue, and I can see where he might feel less-than-grateful towards the person who shoved him into the cyborg body he has without his permission.
