Why is adulting so exhausting?

[personal profile] philstar22 2017-03-24 12:58 am (UTC)(link)
My dad ruptured a disk and my mom had a migraine, so I was taking care of the house today. Grocery shopped, took care of breakfast, lunch, and dinner (a very successful chicken, potato, and pesto crock pot thing), mopped and vacuumed, dealt with the man who came to mow our lawn and the one who came to fix the leak in our attic, went to my Spanish class, then made a pharmacy run on the way home.

I was going to make a cake tonight for my dad, but right now I'm flopped on the couch, with no energy left to do anything. Why is adulting so exhausting? This is supposed to be normal life, right? Why can't I handle what most people handle in the average day without feeling completely drained? I think I fail as an adult.

It requires paying attention to a bunch of mundane, boring, hard-to-remember, detailed, bullshit stuff. And paying attention to mundane boring stuff is actually a lot harder and more tiring than most people'd think. Genuinely. It takes a lot of energy and it sucks. Most of us are bad at it and don't want to do it.

When you actually do this stuff all the time (though nobody mops and vacuums every day, you know, or has the attic fixed every day) it just becomes habit. You walk through the house and tidy this thing, toss that thing, put up a few clean dishes. It all gets done in bits, you know where everything goes and how it all works (in your own space), and it's not nearly so overwhelming.

Plus, having stressed parents that aren't feeling at all well only added to the draining and stressful aspects. Hope you're all feeling better now!
